If were going by the meteorological calendar, then yesterday was officially the first day of Spring.Dont worry, your fashion desk isnt about to declare that everything you own is now outré and the only way to celebrate the new (weather) season is to overhaul your wardrobe entirely. In fact, rather helpfully this (fashion) season, designers seem to have been struck by common sense inspiration, flooding the shops with a solution to that trickiest of spring dilemmas - the coat to jacket transition.
Whilst wed never impose a deadline for shedding your cosy woollen coat in favour of something lighter, reaching for the same coat youve been wearing since January can begin to feel a bit wrong, a bit warm and a bit boring as Easter approaches.

At the same time fashions general shift towards a less minimalist mood means that the jackets arriving in stores now extend far beyond your average beige trench.“The luxe springtime jacket is inspiring everyone to ditch their overcoats and give their wardrobes a lift with something more interesting,” Natalie Kingham, buying director at Matchesfashion.com, tells The Telegraph.“Weve seen an increase in whimsical jackets from Gucci and blazers from Balmain and Saint Laurent selling on the site recently.”
With forecasts for the next few weeks jumping from drizzly and chilly to mild and sunny, there are ways to embrace springs new jazzier jackets which also take into account changeable weather conditions.“Ive spotted a lot of layering of jackets out and about this fashion week which Ive loved,” says Lisa Aiken, retail fashion director at Net-a-Porter.She advises that “a statement bomber with a tailored piece thrown over the shoulders is the perfect way to tackle spring dressing.”And of course, a brilliantly practical excuse for buying two jackets rather than one.

The sleevelessIf you cant bear to be parted from your winter knitwear, then a sleeveless jacket- also known as a vest or a gilet- is a temperature control saviour.Theres also the added bonus that exposed arms and a tendency to look best worn open mean that this style is a handy vehicle for showing off whatevers underneath; now that might be your Bella Freud jumper, in a couple of months it will be a silk tee or printed blouse.Nexts rust-hued belted jacket will complement springs ditsy floral prints while Topshops grey option makes an elegant work outfit paired with wide-legged trousers and a crisp white shirt.
