Raudha Athif, a 21 year-old model and medical student from the Maldives, who has appeared on the cover of Vogue, has been found dead in a hostel dormitory in Bangladesh.
A star of Vogue India???s Beauty in Diversity cover shoot, released in October, the rising model???s death is being treated as suicide, after authorities recovered her body at midday on Wednesday.
???We primarily suspect it is a suicide case. However, we can"t come to any conclusion until we get the autopsy report,??? said Zillur Rahman, officer-in-chargeof Shah Makhdum Police Station, to India???s The Daily Star.
Mahmuda Begum, superintendent at the female-only hostel added that Athif ???always looked happy??? and that it was ???hard to believe she would commit suicide???.Indeed, on her Instagram page, the second-year student at the Islami Bank Medical College in the Nawdapara area had been posting regularly to her 31,000 followers.Outfit snaps, travel logs and selfies highlighting her strikingly beautiful blue eyes were all common from the star, who had described modelling as a hobby rather than something she wanted to pursue as a career.
???Modelling is a hobby rather than a career for me, since I???m studying to become a doctor,??? she told Vogue India when they photographed her last year, picking six models from six nations of the Indian subcontinent to grace their cover.???I???ve never been so bold as to take part in any big pageant before this.???
???Becoming a doctor to help people has always been my dream,??? she told the magazine, explaining that the only advertising campaign she had starred in previously was one for the environmental services at the age of 14.???It was a small environmental campaign for our national television network, encouraging people to ban plastic bags in favour of eco-friendly alternatives,??? she said.
Athif became an internet sensation in the Maldives in 2014, thanks to a shoot that she posted online called the ???Maldivian Girl With Aqua Blue Eyes???.
???The internet is a great place to get noticed,???Vogue India wrote in October, of their reasoning for featuring Athif on their cover.???And given Athif???s unique beauty, it was only a matter of time before offers started pouring in. After experimenting with her pictures on social media sites two years ago, Athif hit gold with her ???Maldivian Girl With Aqua Blue Eyes??? shoot.Shot by Maldivian photographer Sotti for a project with artist Alexey Vladimir, the stunning image of her emerging from a gorgeous blue sea went viral, eventually helping her land this Vogue India cover too.???
