Why did 'Ghostbusters' Leslie Jones find it so tricky to borrow a dress for the red carpet?

The red carpet has become even more important than the catwalk for designers in recent years, due to theenormous amount of coverage on what actresses are wearing. So it"s quite a surprise to learn that one of the four female leads of this summer"sbig box office releaseGhostbusters is havingtrouble findinga dress to wear for an upcoming premiere.

In a tweet posted earlier this week, comedienneLeslie Jones wrote:"It"s so funny how there are no designers wanting to help me with a premiere dress for movie.Hmmm that will change and I remember everything."She then followed this up the next day, writing:"Hmm what a difference a tweet makes.Should I name the designers that didn"t look out?Put y"all ass on blast. You will not get my love later."

Although Leslie Jones didn"t reveal anyspecificreason why it has been so difficult for her to find a dress, it has been assumed by manythat itis because she"s 6ft tall and not of supermodel proportions. That meansshe wouldn"t fit into the sample sizes (usually a UK 6-8) offered by most designers showrooms, which arethe usual source of red carpet finery.

Stylist Jessica Paster, who works with Emily Blunt, has claimed- somewhat harshly- that this is Leslie Jones" own faultfor not being prepared for the reality of designer showrooms."She should have known four to five months ago the date of premiere, and said, "I"m not a sample size, I need to go to designers early or buy myself a dress."Don???t be blaming designers and saying they don???t like you," Paster commented to to Pret-A-Porter.

The sad reality is that being anything larger than size 8 isconsidered a logistical problem in Hollywood."It???s just pure economics," stylistJeanne Yang said to the websiteabout the system."People have this belief that showrooms and designers have racks and racks of clothing in all sizes. They don???t.When you???re a designer, sitting with your accountant, you have to think about how much it costs to create a sample.Itmay take hours to do a muslin, and thousands of dollars to create one specific piece. You justify it because you use it for so many things. One dress has to serve for the runway show, for sales, and to get publicity. If you have a sample that has to fit a model, you don"t have the option of creating things for premieres. No one ever does a variety of sizes."

Leslie Jones isn"t the first star to expose how it is difficult to dress for the red carpet if your figure doesn"t conform to the traditional Hollywood mold.At January"s Golden Globes, actressBryce Dallas Howard, who is a UK size 10,bought her own Jenny Packham and Balmain gowns because it was pretty much impossible for hertoborrow agownin her size."I???ve alluded to this a little bit before, but when you???re not a sample size or if you don???t have a direct relationship with a designer or if you don???t have a lot of notice - those size six dresses aren???t available."Howard explained.

Celebritystylist Manny, who works with Jourdan Dunn and Lottie Moss, spoke to The Telegraphat the time about the reality ofred carpet sizing:"In Paris generally sample size is a 6-8 [UK size] and if you are busty it???s near impossible to fit into a sample. For celebrities larger than a sample size often a brand would let you pull from store stock, but then it means you can???t make alterations as it needs to go back."

It"s also worth noting thatGhostbustersis remarkable in terms of casting.Four women- Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon, Kirsten Wiig plusJones- take the lead roles. All are over 30 with a diverse range of body shapes and size. The factthat the red carpet machinesimplyisn"t equippedfor these women to embark ontheirpromotional duties like so many other sample-sizeHollywood actresses shows just how rare this kind of line-up still is.If there is no demand for more variety ofsamples on the red carpet, brands will not question the current showroom system.

One designer who recognises theimportance of creating gowns for actresses who are breaking down casting barriers is Christian Siriano. The American designerresponded to Jones" emergency tweet and will bedressing her for herupcoming premiere. He isvocal about how important it is to be inclusive as a designer, and said to The Cut:"My mission now is what we"re calling that "everywoman. You can be any size, any age, and wear something from our collection, and that"s so important to me."
