With Cersei and Margaery in prison and Daenerys in the desert for the majority of this season of Game of Thrones, there haven???t been many fashion statements to swoon over of late. But that all changed in last night???s explosive finale.
In the action-packed The Winds of Winter there was wildfire carnage among many other plot-line shockers.Winter arrived at last, Arya finally got her revenge, Jon Snow was crowned King inthe North and Queen Cersei unexpectedlytook the Iron Throne - wearing an ornate, high neck gown that set social media alight.
Perhaps thinking about that old mantra dress for the job you want, not the job you???ve got, Cersei???s leather dress was the total embodiment of one woman???s triumph over adversity; the culmination of years of hard work and covert plotting.Gone were the hessian sack dresses she???s been in all season; in their place the intricate armoured leather, which told the world she was a fighter. The crystal epaulettes on her shoulders were shaped like roaringlions - the Lannister sigil. Her chains which connected her armouring harkedback to her prison chains, showing she was free from the shackles which had once put her at the mercy of her captors.
The dresswas uncompromising, unadorned and undoubtedlydeliberate in the message it portrayed.Earlier this year Michele Clapton, the costume director who worked on Game of Thrones for the first five series, told The Telegraph of the hidden significance behind every costume you see on screen.???I love the fact that you can have a sub story going on because the costume is telling you so much that words aren???t saying at that moment,??? she said, citing the fact that Margaery Tyrellshowed her power over Cersei by wearing revealing dresses and flaunting her youth.???Cersei tried to dress in a more powerful way and dominate her but the one thing she couldn???t do was be young.???
Game of Thrones costume v catwalk???People think the show is all about sex. It???s not, it???s about strong individuals and women in particular,???Clapton previously told The Telegraph - of why she???s loved working on the costumes. And it was certainly the ladies who shone in the finale episode:Daenerys swapped her pastel shades and Grecian gowns for a billowing black number and then later, as she sailed towards Westeros at last, she wore a black, armoured, dragon-adorned dress - her best outfit to date.Sansa also wore head-to-toe black, and returned to her Stark roots by donning a thick black caped dress and fur stole - very Winterfell appropriate.Ellaria Sand, Ollena Tyrell, Yara Greyjoy and Lyanna Mormont further proved the power of a black dress in the all-out explosive finale.
Red carpet style at the Game of Thrones series 6 premiereSo what can we make of this unusual raft of black outfits?Well, judging by the fact that Clapton admits a lot of thought went into the colour of Daenerys???previous outfits - ???that white dress was a removal of herself, like she was trying to cleanse herself???- it could be a rather ominous sign of things to come.
Still, at least black???s the sensible option when it comes to a seriesfilled with battles, snow and a fatefully fluorescent wildfire apocalypse. And with Cersei taking part in a fair bit of brutality herself, she might want to stick to black for the time being.Clapton has said that whilst they do try to use blood they can wash out, due to some of the delicate fabrics for a fight scene there will be at least three different versions of the outfit.
All of which, leaves us wondering how we can get hold of Cersei???s spare outfits.Winter is here and Cersei is colder than ever.
