British costume designer and nominee Sandy Powell paid tribute to the late, great,David Bowie at this year"s Baftas, andit looks like she has done it again at the Oscars, sporting a green and metallic check print Ziggy Stardust-esque suit.
E!"s fashion panelists, includingGiuliana Rancic and Kris Jenner, applauded this look as a brave alternative to the sea of princess gowns on the red carpet. But there was one problem, they talked about the suit and her red hair at length (for at least five minutes) thinking she was actress Tilda Swinton rather than the double-nominated costume designer.
Powellwas nominated for her work in both Carol and Cinderella, but lost out to Jenny Beaven who won for Mad Max:Fury Road.
This isn"t the only case of misidentification on the Oscars red carpet this year.Total Beauty was called out for tweetinga picture of Whoopi Goldberg, who showed off atattoo on her shoulder, with the caption:???We had no idea @Oprah was #tatted, and we love it.???
Powell toldThe Telegraphthat her Bowie tribute at the Baftaswas inspired by Freddie Burretti, a designer and tailor who created the turquoise suit which Bowie worein the video for the 1971 hit Life on Mars.
???I???ve always like that suit, and I???d love to have one, one day???Powell told us.Her sartorial statement wasn???t directly linked to the singer"s recent passing.???David Bowie was a big influence on my life and my work. It???s something I???ve been meaning to do for a long time because it???s my favourite Bowie outfit.I did decide a while ago, and the Baftas provided the right opportunity to go ahead.???
The similarities between the two are striking, not least because Powell???s signature red hair is almost exactly like Bowie???s in the hit music video.???It wasn???t meant to be a replica??? she explained.???It was meant to be my version ??? a little homage.???
