A major exhibition of the late Azzedine Alaïas work will open in London in spring 2018, the Design Museum announced on Wednesday.
Azzedine Alaïa:The Couturier, set for a five-month run from 10th May, will showcase more than 60 examples of Alaïas couture pieces - from impeccable tailoring to the spray-on-tight dresses that were synonymous with his name.
Before his death in November, Alaïa collaborated with guest curator Mark Wilson to personally select works from his archive for display - a factor that will likely motivate thousands of international visitors, keen to see one of the designer"s final projects.
Alaïa apparently also spent time documenting his creative process for the museum, meaning the exhibition will be a must-see for fashion students too.
Following his untimely passing on 18 November 2017, the Design Museum will now present this unique exhibition planned by Alaïa himself exploring his passion and energy for fashion as he himself intended it to be seen, a spokesperson for the museum said in a statement.
Azzedine Alaïa was recognised throughout his life as a master couturier who expressed the timeless beauty of the female form in the most refined degree of haute couture.
This public tribute follows one made last week at the British Fashion Councils annual Fashion Awards, which saw Naomi Campbell, Stephanie Seymour, Veronica Webb and more of the designers supermodel friends and muses speak about his impact and legacy on stage in front of an audience of industry figureheads.
“Everyone in this room knows that Azzedine was able to transform a womans body into something special; make you look great and still like a woman,” Campbell said.“He captured the essence of femininity. But beyond his work as a designer, from the second day I met him, he became my papa.”
